Sie ist eine der ganz Großen in der zeitgenössischen Kunst – Cindy Sherman (* 1954). Seit Beginn ihres Schaffens vor ca. 30 Jahren setzt sie sich in ihrer Kunst permanent mit der Frage nach der Identität auseinander, die von Film und Fernsehen, Magazinen, Internet maßgeblich geprägt wird. Provokativ spielt sie mit Rollenbildern, Kostümen und Szenerien. Dabei nimmt sie verschiedene Rollen in der Vorbereitung und hinter der Kamera an – sie ist Fotografin und gleichzeitig Stylistin, auch Location Scout und kreiert aus Kostümen, Make-up und ganz unterschiedlichen Umgebungen unzählige faszinierende Gemälde vom Clown bis hin zur alternden Dame der Gesellschaft. Und alle ihrer Arbeiten zeigen sie selbst als Modell, nie aalglatt und schön, sondern immer provokant, ehrlich, manchmal schockierend, traurig oder einfach nur einprägsam – besonders.

Das Museum of Modern Art in New York zeigt nun bis zum 11. Juni 2012 170 Werke der Fotokünstlerin als Retrospektive, angefangen Mitte der Siebziger Jahre bis heute. Absolutes Highlight sind dabei ihre Hauptserien, wie die wegweisenden Schwarzweißbilder “Untitled Film Stills” (1977–80), die Cindy Sherman in klischeehaften Frauenrollenbildern zeigen und von Hollywoodfilmen der 1950er und 1960er Jahre inspiriert wurden, sowie vom Film Noir und europäischen Art-House Filmen.

Auch ihre berühmten historischen Porträts sind on show und zeigen sie in Posen von Aristokraten und Milchmädchen gleichermaßen.
Ihre neueste Serie (2010) murals (2010) ist zu sehen, wo Sherman nicht nur mit Kostümen und Posen experimentiert, sondern im Nachhinein ihr Gesicht digital verändert. Die Augen stehen plötzlich enger, die Lippen werden schmaler. Die Figuren sind dabei Protagonisten ihrer eigenen Welt, Phantasie und Realität sollen verschmelzen.
Das Medium Film war immer der wahrscheinlich größte Einfluss auf Shermans künstlerisches Arbeiten. Deshalb hat sie in Verbindung mit der Ausstellung Retrospektive Filme der verschiedensten Genres ausgesucht, die ihre Interessen und Einflüsse zeigen und Anfang April als Carte Blanche (zu deutsch: Blankovollmacht) zu sehen sind. Auch ihr eigener Kurzfilm Doll Clothes (1975) und ihr Feature Office Killer (1997) sind dabei.
